NUCYNTA (tapentadol) is a prescription-only centrally-acting analgesic used for the management of moderate to severe acute pain. It is a Schedule II controlled substance in the United States due to its potential for abuse, addiction, and serious risks.

1. 🧪 Mechanism of Action

Tapentadol has a dual mechanism of action:

• Mu-opioid receptor agonist (similar to traditional opioids like oxycodone).

• Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (similar to some antidepressants).

This unique profile means it carries risks associated with both opioid and serotonin/norepinephrine-affecting drugs.

2. ⚠️ Critical Risks & Side Effects

• Respiratory Depression: Like all opioids, tapentadol can slow or stop breathing, especially in higher doses or when combined with other depressants. This can be fatal.
